Maintaining Your Furniture

Dusting
Regular dusting is crucial in preventing the build up of dust and grime. Use a dry, soft microfibre cloth to remove dust from all surfaces.
Clean spills immediately
Prompt attention to any spills will prevent stains and long term damage. Use a clean, soft cloth to wipe spills immediately. If required, use a very small amount of mild, non-abrasive soap for any residue and difficult marks and wipe with a damp soft cloth.
Avoid very hard scrubbing as it can result in a buffed/slightly polished surface in the
location of the scrubbing.
Avoid harsh chemicals and products
Abrasive cleaners can damage the finish. Opt for gentle cleaning solutions with a mixture of warm water and mild soap for regular cleaning. We recommend using new cleaning products in an inconspicuous area first to ensure there is no damage to the
finish.

Timber Care

Protect against moisture
Excessive moisture can permanently warp and damage timber joinery. Avoid any excessive water when cleaning. Use lightly damp, soft cloths to wipe surfaces. The humidity level in your home will make timber expand and contract – which is normal – but great extremes, from air conditioned dryness to sudden humidity happening
regularly can cause uneven movement. This is due mostly in part to it being
unnatural movement.

Sunlight exposure
Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can fade and damage wood finishes. You may need to consider the positioning of your furniture or use curtains, blinds, or UV-protective window films to shield your joinery from harmful rays during peak sunlight.
Alternatively, you can just accept that this is what timber does and enjoy its natural response to its environment.

Polishing
Use a high-quality wood cleaner or polish, following the manufacturer’s instructions using a soft cloth, gently buff the surface. This both cleans and enhances the timbers beauty. We generally recommend using a non-silicone, non-abrasive spray wax.

Timber Care Oils
We recommend using OSMO oils and Osmo maintenance sprays for maintaining and nourishing the quality, beauty and durability of your timber items when they are finished with Osmo Woodwax oils. When furniture is finished with lacquer, we recommend using non-silicone, non-abrasive spray wax. The same spray wax can be
used to revive an Osmo Oil finish.

Refinishing and repairs
At some point, your furniture will get scratched or dented in some way - this is part of life. A quick polish with a spray wax or a maintenance oil will help with scratches.
Dents are a little more difficult to recover. For the most part, a dent may not expose the timber under the finish and so would not necessarily require any major action other than to shed a tear for the now forever changed state of your furniture. There a few tricks to fixing a dent that has not exposed the timber beneath the finish depending on what the finish is. If you are unsure, please get in touch.
Ultimately, the question you need to ask yourself is not, ‘can it be fixed?’. The more pertinent question is ‘can I be bothered to get it fixed?’. For most people, this is a no. In the case of a higher traffic surface like a dining table for instance, at some point it may well need a completely new coat. If this is an oil finish, it can be done in situ. If it is a lacquer finish, it would need to be taken away to be sanded and re-polished. If furniture is maintained well, it may never ever need a new top coat.

Timber is a living material, and overtime can shift, move and contract due to natural elements. It is important that you periodically inspect your furniture or joinery to prevent minor changes becoming problems.
Overtime you may require refinishing of your furniture or joinery to restore to its original condition. We highly recommend consulting with a professional restorer or artesian to ensure quality is maintained.
