Tim designs and constructs furniture in veneer and solid timber,
to commission, and to limited and batch runs.

Commissions

Often that unique piece of furniture that you are looking for does not yet exist. You may have parts of an idea or have been inspired by an image and would love to reflect that in something special. This is where a Commission comes in. It is a great challenge and a joy for Tim to turn that idea or concept into a unique piece of furniture. He enjoys the interaction between the maker and the client when designing a piece. Not much comes close to the satisfaction of turning a dream into a tangible reality.

About

Tim approaches the design and making of furniture from an inbuilt passion and love of the craft. Some of this is hereditary as on one side of the family was a coach builder and on the other side, the family owned and ran a timber mill in Heron Creek. It was this love of the craft which drove him to study design. It seemed like a natural step to take because one who loves the process does not want to waste time and skills on making ugly objects.

He finds that his designs tend to have a natural flow about them, with soft curves and clean uncluttered forms; nothing ornate or extravagantly decorated. Predominantly one timber is used with a complementary timber for small details. This was never an intention initially, but he felt that when looking at his designs, they ‘asked’ to be of a single colour. This helps to show the beautiful grain patterns of some of the world’s timbers and lets the timber speak for itself rather than wild contrasts in colour detracting from an otherwise simple and beautiful piece.

When designing a piece or a range of furniture, it is driven by a desire for beauty. Being that each piece designed is then also made by Tim he can leave room for small changes as he goes, often those delicate little details which are so hard to express in a drawing can be resolved in the making process. Alternatively, as a piece comes together, details that were drawn in can be taken out as it can become clear they are too much or completely unnecessary.

At the end of the day, Tim is doing what he loves. This is reflected in each and every facet of his work.

Why Handmade

Why would anyone want handmade furniture?

The real problem that exists is that there is a lack of appreciation for the time, processes and passion involved.

Ultimately, when purchasing or commissioning a piece of furniture or an object from a Designer/Craftsman, you are investing in beauty. These are made of the highest quality. No compromise has been made or shortcut been taken. Each step is considered carefully, from the design, to the construction and finish, even down to timber selection and grain orientation. There is something genuinely unique and special in handcrafted objects.

It is these pieces that set our environment apart from the mundane. It speaks volumes for one who desires these items, who wants what no one else has. It is a certain person who will go to the trouble of commissioning a piece. They seek a level of satisfaction that cannot be met in the ordinary; whether it be comfort, ergonomics, function or aesthetics. Combining these parameters harmoniously into an object of beauty can often push the Craftsman where he would not naturally go and present a challenge that can result in an outcome beyond what either Craftsman or client initially imagined.

The difference between mass produced items and handcrafted ones often comes down to tiny details, which, when listed may seem insignificant, but when applied, make all the difference. There are some details that only the experience and skilful hand of a Craftsman can produce. These pieces are not the result of a soulless process performed routinely. Each piece is infused with the passion and inspiration of the maker. That is why each handcrafted piece has a sense of ‘presence’ that many others lack. That is why it demands your attention.
